The secure use of your PIN protects against misuse by third parties

Nobody knows your PIN – and with good reason: With the help of your PIN, an unauthorized person can authorize and dispose of your money. Do not give out your PIN under any circumstances. In addition, you should not write it down and destroy the letter from your bank in which it was communicated to you.

When entering your PIN, you should always make sure that nobody is watching you as you enter it. You never have to enter your PIN on doors that you can open with your credit card. If a device is attached to a door that prompts you to enter it, cheaters are likely to have their hands in the game. Do not enter them, but notify the police.

Credit card fraud on the Internet

If you pay with your credit card on the Internet, you should follow the same rules as for online banking: You should have a current firewall and a current virus program with the latest updates.

To protect yourself from credit card fraud, you should only enter your card details on encrypted pages. You can recognize these pages by the lock that appears in the address field on the left of your browser.

There are always cases of phishing where fraudsters try to get your credit card details, IBAN or BIC via email. It’s best not to open emails where you don’t know the sender. If you do, you should not click the link or attachment contained in it under any circumstances. Otherwise, there is a high risk that you will download a virus that allows fraudsters to access your data – which makes credit card fraud possible.

General tips for protecting against credit card fraud

You should never leave your credit card unattended – whether at work or with friends. Instead, always carry your card with you. The police advise keeping them in closed inner pockets of your clothes that are close to your body. In addition, you shouldn’t put all your cards in one bag.

If something looks strange to you at an ATM, you should under no circumstances ignore it. Calls instead the police and make the officials on a possible credit card fraud alert.

You should also check your bank statement regularly. This is the only way to tell whether there is a credit card fraud.

Always inform the police about credit card fraud

If you find anything suspicious, you should immediately contact the police. If you suspect something, you better call once too often than credit card fraud goes unnoticed and goes unpunished.
