Buying and selling a property is often a stressful time, which can be made even more difficult when invasive plants are found in the garden. To help homeowners identify plants before buying a new home, or to solve current problems, surveying experts at Stokemont.com have revealed the most ‘common’ plants that can devalue property by up to 15%.
Japanese knotweed is an invasive plant identified by its creamy white flowers, bamboo-like stems, and shaped leaves.
It is one of the most invasive weeds in the UK, infamous for its devastating ability to cause costly damage.
Its roots can reach up to 20 meters underground, which makes its eradication extremely difficult.
According to Stokemont, the spread of the weed could damage pipes, pine trees and weaken the foundations of buildings.

While most trees cause no damage, experts said large ones like poplar, willow and oak can be dangerous if grown near the property.
Poplar trees have fast-growing root systems that can spread up to 40 meters and absorb 1000 liters of water and nutrients from the soil.
Bradley said: “They could live for around 50 years and are more difficult to remove as their roots get thicker and bigger over time.
“Their age, soil type, location, depth are all important in deciding if your tree is a problem.
‘If grown too close to your property they could lead to further hazard or foundation cracks, sags and other structural faults which could cost you between £5,000 and £25,000 to repair.’
Another invasive plant that can spread seeds for yards is Himalayan balsam.
Stokemont experts said: ‘It was introduced to the UK in 1839. It grows up to two to three meters tall and has pink flowers in summer and early autumn.’
It can kill other plants and reduce biodiversity by stealing light, nutrients and water.
Bradley commented: “It poses no physical danger to humans, but its significant ecological impact on nature and associated laws are not favored by buyers.
“It is therefore recommended to keep this plant controlled or eradicated, and to ensure that it does not spread to your neighbors as it may be illegal.”
